Information Regarding Pedagogy Tests for Certification
updated 10/18/04
SBEC has become aware that some candidates have successfully completed a pedagogy test at a grade level that is not in strict compliance with SBEC policy. Due to the confusion that has been inadvertently created by the language in the TExES / ExCET 2003-2004 registration bulletin concerning the correct pedagogy and content test combinations, SBEC will accept any combination of pedagogy and content area tests successfully completed through June 26, 2004. The grade level of pedagogy test (PPR) passed after June 26, 2004 must correspond to the grade levels of the initial content-area certificate sought.
Pedagogy
Tests for Classroom Certificates
To obtain an initial certificate in Texas, all candidates must pass a pedagogy
test and content-area requirements (usually a content-area test, if available).
Under the TExES program, the Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities (PPR)
tests (EC-4, 4-8, 8-12, or EC-12) fulfill the pedagogy requirement.
The content-area
test, not the pedagogy test, determines the certificate and its grade levels.
Example: A candidate
seeking a TExES-based Special Education EC-12 certificate must take TExES
EC-12 PPR test. That candidate will be certified to teach at the EC-12 grade
level based on passing the TExES Special Education EC-12 content-area test.
or
A candidate
seeking a TExES-based Generalist 4-8 certificate must take either the TExES
4-8 or EC-12 PPR test. That candidate will be certified to teach at the 4-8
grade level based on passing the TExES Generalist 4-8 content-area test.
Preparation programs
are strongly encouraged to carefully review each candidate’s exam registration
to ensure that the proper grade level of pedagogy test passed (PPR) corresponds
to the grade levels of the initial content-area certificate sought.
In compliance with the intent of the overlap year policy, it is crucial to remember that passing scores on ExCET Elementary and Secondary PD tests administered on or before June 28, 2003 may be used for certification purposes only through August 31, 2004 . Candidates who have passed an ExCET PD test, but have not passed a content area test or have not completed all other requirements for certification by August 31 2004, will be required to take and pass the appropriate TExES PPR test.

| Note:
The Trade and Industrial Education (170 TIE) PPR may only be used for candidates
seeking initial or additional certification in Trade and Industrial Education
(TIE). The TIE PPR may not be used for any other certification. If a candidate
is seeking to add the TIE certification to an existing certification, they
must take the TIE PPR, even if they have already taken and passed a PPR
test or other pedagogy test previously. This is because the TIE PPR exam
contains subject matter that is specific to the TIE curriculum. |
